SYNOPSIS
Ji Gang-Hui (Lee Se-Young) grew up in a place that many might find unconventional for a childhood: Motel California. Perched on the outskirts of her rural hometown, the motel was a modest establishment with peeling paint and a flickering neon sign that hummed softly at night. Her father, a hardworking man with a quiet disposition, managed the motel with tireless dedication, while her mother, a woman of mixed-race heritage, brought warmth and vibrancy to the otherwise drab surroundings. Yet, their family was far from ordinary, and in a tight-knit village where every deviation from the norm was scrutinized, Gang Hui’s family became a subject of endless whispers and judgment.
The local residents—many of whom rarely ventured beyond the village—found Gang Hui’s family background peculiar. Her mother’s heritage and her father’s business both set them apart, and this difference became a quiet storm that followed Gang Hui wherever she went. Children parroted their parents’ words, and adults masked their curiosity with thinly veiled pity or disdain. Gang Hui’s world, confined to the motel and the village, often felt suffocating. She carried a deep wound in her heart from those years, a mix of loneliness and resentment that shaped her view of the world.
Despite this, there was a bright spot in her childhood: Cheon Yeon Su (Na In-Woo). He was her best friend, her confidant, and eventually, her first love. Cheon Yeon Su had a gentle soul and a quiet sense of humor that put her at ease. The two spent countless hours exploring the countryside, sharing dreams under the sprawling night sky, and escaping the suffocating gaze of the villagers. To Gang Hui, Yeon Su was a safe haven, a reminder that kindness could thrive even in a place that often felt cold.
But life, as it often does, pulled them in different directions. When Gang Hui turned 20, she decided she couldn’t stay in the village any longer. The weight of the past and the promise of a brighter future drew her to Seoul, a city of endless possibilities. There, she threw herself into her studies and later her career, becoming an interior designer of growing renown. Her meticulous eye for detail and innovative designs quickly earned her a reputation in the industry. By the time she reached her early 30s, Gang Hui was at the apex of her career, designing spaces that were featured in magazines and admired by clients.
Yet, despite her success, something stirred within her. It wasn’t dissatisfaction with her work or her life in Seoul, but an inexplicable pull toward the place she had once vowed to leave behind. The memories of her childhood, both painful and cherished, beckoned her. After 12 years, she made the decision to return to her hometown. It was a decision that puzzled her colleagues and friends, but to Gang Hui, it felt necessary—a step toward confronting the ghosts of her past.
Upon arriving in the village, Gang Hui found it both familiar and foreign. The motel, still run by her aging father, looked smaller than she remembered, its once-vivid sign now dimmed by time. The villagers’ whispers hadn’t faded either; if anything, her return only reignited their curiosity. But amidst the awkward reunions and lingering judgments, there was one face she longed to see: Cheon Yeon Su.
Cheon Yeon Su had stayed behind, carving out a life as the village veterinarian. He was a fixture in the community, tending to the animals that sustained the livelihoods of the farmers. Over the years, he had become somewhat of an enigma. Despite the attention he received from local families eager to introduce him to their daughters, he remained unattached. To deflect their persistent matchmaking efforts, he allowed a rumor to circulate that he was engaged to a fellow veterinarian, a story he neither confirmed nor denied. But the truth was simpler: the only woman he had ever loved was Ji Gang Hui.
Their reunion was bittersweet. The years had changed them both, but the connection they shared as young adults had not completely faded. For Cheon Yeon Su, seeing Gang Hui again stirred feelings he had long buried, while for Gang Hui, Yeon Su represented a piece of her past that had remained untouched by time. As they navigated the complexities of their renewed relationship, they were forced to confront the choices that had brought them to this point.
In the quiet corners of the village, amidst the rolling hills and golden fields, Gang Hui and Yeon Su found themselves drawn together once more. Their story, shaped by years of separation and longing, unfolded like a second chance. But with it came questions: Could they overcome the scars of their past? Could they rebuild what had been lost? And most importantly, could they find a way to move forward, together, in a place that had once seemed determined to keep them apart?
For Ji Gang Hui and Cheon Yeon Su, the answers lay not in the whispers of the villagers or the shadows of their memories, but in the choices they made in the present. And perhaps, in the stillness of their small hometown, they would find the courage to write a new chapter to their story—one of healing, love, and belonging.
